Canvas is much lighter and durable for wet weather such as rain and sleet and snow. With leather, it tends to become a dewy paste when wet and will soak everything on the inside. This was a genius idea because he was the first to create this. People from all over the world would come to Louis Vuitton's place in Paris to buy a trunk before going on long voyages around the world.
